Oxygen

The production of oxygen is based on the splitting of air into its components.

In our air separation plants, compressed air is cleaned and then compressed. The compressed air is then cooled to very low temperatures. One then starts compressing again to liquefy the air and separate it by distillation into liquid oxygen and oxygen gas, among others.

Certification of oxygen

World-wide, all our air separation plants are developed, constructed and operated in-house by our Linde Engineering division. For deliveries in the Benelux the air gases such as gaseous and liquid oxygen are produced in the Botlek (Rotterdam) and IJmuiden (on the Tata Steel site).

ODOROX® oxygen

ODOROX®, deodorized oxygen from Linde Gas responds to the very real risk of fire or explosion by providing a distinct warning odor when the oxygen concentration inadvertently rises. Oxygen is odorless and colorless and therefore difficult to detect. The causes of oxygen leaks vary widely, from unpredictable leaks in hoses, valves or connections to misuse, such as cleaning clothes with oxygen.

The oxygen concentration in the air (normally 21%) only has to rise 3% or the rate of combustion doubles. An increase of up to 40% means that the rate of combustion increases tenfold in contact with a spark or open flame. Thus, if there is an oxygen leak, it is essential that it be noticed before ignition occurs.

ODOROX® contains small amounts of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) which, with its particularly strong odor, warns of an increase in oxygen concentration of only 1%. The small amount of DMS in oxygen does not affect the performance of the autogenous process or the working environment. ODOROX® odorized oxygen significantly increases safety and is intended for use in all industrial applications where autogenous processes are commonly used. ODOROX ® is available in liquid (bulk) form, in 50 liter gas cylinders and in packages.
