Argon

The production of argon is based on the separation of air into its components

Naturally, Linde is also an argon gas supplier. In our air separation plants, compressed air is cleaned and then compressed. The compressed air is then cooled to very low temperatures. It is then compressed again to liquefy the air and separate it by distillation into, among others, argon gas.

What is argon?

Argon (Ar) is the third of the 7 noble gases in the periodic table under the atomic number 18 with the chemical symbol Ar. Argon is an odorless, colorless, mono-atomic and inert gas, making it particularly attractive as a shielding gas in a wide range of welding applications. This gas is heavier than air and a poor electrical conductor. Argon is the most abundant noble gas on earth.

How is argon used?

Argon is not only used as a shielding gas, but it is also used very frequently in this field. As an inert gas, it is preferentially used for MIG and TIG welding. As a shielding gas, it surrounds the arc and the molten metal and protects it from the influence of oxygen from the ambient air. Argon is also used in lighting, because even high heat does not increase the reactivity of this noble gas and it is therefore often used as a filler gas in light bulbs. Argon is used in a wide variety of welding and cutting applications. Argon's chemical properties make it particularly suitable as a shielding and welding gas. It is heavier than air and therefore protects against the highly flammable oxygen in the ambient air during welding.

Why are there different purities and what is their purpose?

Linde Gas Benelux offers argon in different purities and forms of delivery. The purity level determines the scope of welding. The material and the welding result vary according to the purity. Argon 4.6 is particularly suitable as a welding gas for thinner materials such as aluminum and non-ferrous metals. In TIG shield gas welding, it is worth switching to a purity of argon 4.6 for materials such as titanium or stainless steel - this purity achieves particularly good welding results. This purity level is also often used in the development of semiconductors. The professional gas for arc welding, plasma welding and plasma cutting is argon 5.0, which has a purity of 99.999%. We offer argon not only in different purities, but also in bottle sizes. From 20 liters to 50 liters at 200 bar or 300 bar, and in packages, you will find delivery types tailored to your needs. Do you need the welding gas at different places in your company? No problem! The Argon GENIE® is designed for mobile use - stable, lightweight, intelligent display and ergonomic handles.
