Oxygen enrichment in Claus systems

Elimination of bottlenecks in refineries

Claus units in refineries process highly concentrated hydrogen sulfide (H2S) fractions and convert them into elemental sulfur. They can also remove impurities, particularly by converting ammonia to nitrogen and water.

Stricter environmental regulations lead to products with correspondingly lower sulfur content. As a result, the H2S throughput in Claus plants is increasing; these plants can thus become a bottleneck.

Our solution for the problem:

Oxygen enrichment with a new type of burner (patent pending).

In eliminating this bottleneck, oxygen enrichment of the combustion air with a burner newly developed by Linde Gas considerably increases capacity. This type of burner guarantees excellent mixing of the hydrogen sulfide with the oxygen-enriched air over a wide loading range.

Advantages of oxygen enrichment:
  • Higher capacity of the Claus plant
  • Higher productivity without changing the pressure drop
  • More effective combustion of ammonia-containing feedstocks
  • Less effort for flue gas cleaning (reduced nitrogen throughput)
